US Election: Trump’s Behaviour Will Encourage African Tyrants – Says Shehu Sani

President Donald Trump’s refusal to concede defeat in the just-concluded United States (US) presidential election is having a negative toll on America’s international reputation.

Some experts in world politics are beginning to question the claim that US is a perfect template for democracy, while others believe that the stance of President Trump will produce serious consequences not only for the nation but also for Africa.

One of those who share this view is a former Nigerian federal lawmaker, Shehu Sani, who represented Kaduna Central.

Sani opined on Sunday, November 15, that the stiff-necked position of Trump will encourage persons in Africa he described as tyrants to stay put in office even after they have been defeated in elections.

The former senator went to say that this will ultimately lead to the suffocation of democracy in many countries of the world.

He tweeted:

“America has always been an exemplar for democracy and freedom.

“The behavior of its leader not just threaten the moral standard of that country but gives tyrants in Africa and other parts of the World a justification to suffocate democracy. The events in America are of concern to us.”
