PDP Drags Gbajabiamila, Rep, INEC To Court Over Defection

In a surprising turn of event, Nigeria’s lead opposition party has dragged the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, and one of its former lawmakers, Ephraim Nwuzi, to court.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was also joined in the suit, according to a report by Vanguard.

The crisis between the PDP and Gbahabiamila started when Nwuzi, representing Etche/Onuma Federal Constituency of Rivers state, decided to dump the PDP for the ruling All Progressives Congress.

When Gbajabiamila announced the defection of Nwuzi on Wednesday, October 7, the PDP leaders and members in the House openly objected, urging Gbajabiamila to declare his seat vacant.

According to the minority leader, Ndudi Elumelu, such defection can only be allowed if there was a crisis in the party.

Elumelu said there was no crisis in the PDP in Rivers state and therefore, demanded that the seat be declared vacant.

However, in his response, Gbajabiamila said he made similar points the PDP leaders were making when he was the minority leader and his party members were defecting to the ruling party.

The speaker also brought the issue of some absentee lawmakers allegedly from the PDP whose seat will be declared vacant should they strictly apply the rules.
