A military commander has claimed to be unaware that the Nigerian Army denied deploying soldiers at the Lekki tollgate to disperse protesters.
Brig Gen Ahmed Taiwo, the commander of the 81 division, made the statement on Saturday, November 21, when he appeared before a Lagos state judicial panel of inquiry investigating incidences of police brutality.
The officer’s comments were made when responding to questions from Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN), the counsel for some of the EndSARS protesters, Vanguard reported.
Olumide-Fusika had pointed out that the Nigerian Army on its Twitter page described reports about soldiers being at Lekki toll gate as fake news.
But in response, Taiwo said:
“I have not seen the denial that the Nigerian Army on Twitter called their presence at the tollgate as fake news.”
He denied telling lies and said that the Nigerian Army made the first statements because they did not have the full facts and the army was not sent to Lekki to break up the protest.
