Rotimi Amaechi, minister of transport, has backed work and housing minister, Babatunde Raji Fashola’s call to honour the zoning formula ahead of 2023.
Speaking on Tuesday, December 1, on Channels TV, Amaechi said All Progressives Congress (APC) is built on the principles of zoning and should be accorded the deserved respect in picking its presidential candidates.
The constitution of the country permits every qualified and credible Nigerian to vote and be voted.
However, due to the tribal diversities of the country, political parties have adopted the zoning formula to ensure the equal rotation of power across the geo-political zones.
When asked if the APC would zone power to the south, the transport minister said he did not have the assurance but the zoning formula must be respected.
“It is a difficult question for me to respond to. I just believe that the zoning, which was done in the North and South should be respected, just like Fashola said.”
Amaechi also said it is “a bit too early” to discuss 2023 presidency when being asked if he would throw the hat into the ring should the APC zone its presidency to the south.
